Hookah Smoking And Hookah Bars: Safe, Unsafe Or Just A Passing Fad?
If you have teenagers or young adults in your family that are into hookah smoking, you may have some concerns. As a tobacco, many people wonder if hookah is addictive or unsafe, like cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco. While evidence on the dangers of hookah smoking is somewhat conflicting, the general medical consensus seems to be that smoking hookah is at least equally dangerous to cigarette smoking. Hookah contains nicotine and creates carbon monoxide just as cigarettes do. In terms of addictiveness, smoking hookah probably rivals cigarettes in addictiveness also.
As to whether smoking a hookah makes you high, the jury is out on that one. The high experienced from hookah smoking may be more physically than chemically induced. As hookah is smoked by inhaling and retaining smoke for a time, the reported high is probably similar to the dizzy, head rush feeling of holding your breath.
People living in Arab world made smoking as culture and tradition. Communal smoking is done with a solitary or twofold hosepipe, and occasionally even more frequent such as a three times or quartette pipe in the forms of get-togethers or small celebrations. When the smoker is done, moreover, the pipe is positioned reverse on the bench suggesting that it is obtainable, or it is given to the next user. It has been recorded that the Arabs are the main shisha smokers in the Earth and have the most shisha Cafes.
In many coffee bars, they tender hookahs. Coffee shops are extensive and are surrounded by the main social meeting spaces in the Arab world. Some emigrant Britons coming to Middle East to take up hookah in coffee shops to build up for the need of bars in the district, particularly where a bar is located.
Other concerns stem from hookah’s similarity to opium and hashish smoking. The shared use of the hookah pipe, the heated water smoke and the group smoking concern many people. Hookah smoking is not illegal for those who are of age to smoke any other form of tobacco. The one issue that is a concern is that as with any other shared mouthpiece, saliva born pathogens can be transmitted.
Having said this, let me state that while I am in no way advocating the smoking of hookah, I do advise caution and balance when jumping in to attack or forbid it with your of-age teens and young adults. Why? Because I think smoking is cool? No way. But hookah smoking is currently very much in vogue with teens and young adults. Teens think hookah smoking is cool and urbane, just like many of us thought chewing tobacco was cool at one time.
My advice on hookah smoking is like my advice on any other issue in parenting. Know your kids. Make your response fit your kid, not your kid fit your response. In other words, is your kid generally trustworthy and reliable? If so, while keeping the lines of communication open, take this hookah fashion one step at a time, if he is of age. Every generation has seen its fads and crazes, some more dangerous than others. By keeping your head and acting rationally, you’ll get a lot farther than over-reacting and alienating your child. And really, how long is any kid going to be able to stand the taste of smoked pineapple or watermelon? I’m pretty sure that the novelty fades quickly. And stay informed about hookah, cigarettes, drugs and all health issues.
